Foil Disks: The Secret Weapon of Engaging OOH Ads

The Project X Newsletter: Volume XXXV

Well, we did it. Another month in the books. Into May and the heart of spring we go, with cherry blossoms blooming, Cinco de Mayo parties at full tilt (well, social distanced “get togethers” maybe), Mother’s Day weekend, and Memorial Day fast approaching. And it’s important we stop right there. Let’s take a minute to celebrate all of the Mom’s out there. It’s been a tough 12+ months for most, but Moms deal with more than most. If you were to talk to most of your friends about who their biggest inspiration is, the person they look up to the most, or someone who has always been there for them no matter what, you're likely to get a lot of them saying their Mother.

Mothers definitely play a big role in our lives. They're the ones who brought us into this world, and they’re the ones who are going to see us through all the unforgiving adversities that life has to throw at us. But we take them for granted at times and we forget to show them how much we appreciate them. So with Mother’s Day in a short 48 hours, let's celebrate Mom the best way we can, and remember all she does and continues to do for us.

With that in mind, here are Forbes 41 Great Mother’s Day Gift Ideas For All The Special Moms In Your Life.

Market Update: San Francisco, CA

In this week's edition of the market update, our travels take us back west again to The Golden City of San Francisco. For those of you who haven’t visited this city by the bay, San Francisco is home to cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, and eclectic mix of architecture, and landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, Fisherman’s Wharf, and it’s Chinatown & North Beach districts. As the 16th most populous city in the US, and fourth in California, San Francisco was the county with the seventh-highest income in the United States in 2019 with a per capita income of $139,405. With technology continuing to be a driving force globally, it’s important to note that San Francisco is also the headquarters of companies such as Twitter, Square, Airbnb, Salesforce, Dropbox, Uber, and Lyft.

As the recovery continues across the country from the covid-19 pandemic, some cities are further along than others. San Francisco was one of the major US cities hit hardest by the virus, giving their first stay at home order back on Tuesday, March 16th, 2020. While schools have slowly started to reopen under the SFDPH’s strict guidelines, it’s been an extremely slow rebound for the city who just announced new updates to their restrictions on Thursday, May 6th, 2021. Retail stores, indoor shopping and libraries can now operate at 50% capacity, with similar guidelines for nonessential offices, restaurants, bars (25% without a meal), museums, movie theaters, gyms, hair salons, massage centers, and skin care spas.

When it comes to OOH media in San Francisco, there is a wide variety of placements to reach any audience profile across the DMA. While typically a strong transit market, BART and CAL-Train rail systems are still seeing a significantly reduced ridership, approximately 30% - 35% of pre-covid circulation. Pedestrian traffic downtown is also still somewhat limited, but street furniture remains a strong format for reach & frequency with placements such as digital/static transit shelters, digital newsstands and oversized pillars. Vehicular traffic in and around the city, from Hwy 101 to I-280, I-680, I-80, and local surface streets is continuing to increase. Daily miles traveled in San Francisco DMA is currently 92% of what it was at the same time in 2019, making roadside bulletins, wallscapes and posters a prime format for scale and impact.

We will continue to provide updates on various markets across the country in the coming weeks, and if you ever have specific questions, you can always reach out to hello@pjxmedia.com.

Why advertising needs to keep selling but also save the world (via Creative Review)
Being a brand with purpose doesn’t mean that you’re not interested in selling. The pandemic is highlighting the cracks in capitalism. Not only governmental ineptitude, cronyism and a desire to silence society (as seen by the latest bill to stop peaceful protest), but media bias, inequality and the fact that the 1% are getting richer and to hell with everyone else. So who (or what) is stepping into the breach? Brands.

How—And When—Agencies Are Coming Back Into The Office (via Adage)
Nationwide estimates show that more than 1-in-4 Americans are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the bulk of states are due to cross the 50% immunization threshold by mid-June. And, in New York, the literal home of Madison Avenue, Governor Andrew Cuomo just announced a “major reopening” plan for that state as well as New Jersey, and Connecticut to take place on May 19.
